GAS DIFFUSION ELECTRODE

Industry Overview:

Gas diffusion electrodes (GDE) electrodes are in conjunction with a solid, liquid, and gaseous interface to conduct an electrochemical reaction supported by an electric conducting catalyst between the liquid and gaseous phase. GDEs are mainly used in fuel cells where they convert chemical energy into electrical energy by making oxygen and hydrogen react at the gas diffusion electrode. For the interaction of gas and liquid, a porous foil is fixed which acts as a catalyst.

The growth in the GDE industry is due to increasing awareness about climate issues. Due to this, governments across the world have pledged to conduct their manufacturing business at zero net emissions. The automotive industry is also focused to use alternate fuels for private and commercial vehicles to tackle climate change. The automotive industry is employing fuel cell technology rapidly. Fuel cell production is directly linked with GDEs. GDEs are an important component of fuel cells. There are multiple applications of fuel cells. Along with generating electrical energy GDEs in fuel cells are also used for battery backups and heat and power generation for homes. Consumer behavior worldwide is changing as awareness about the environment is increasing. People want to limit the use of fossil fuels which are exhaustible and use fuels like hydrogen which are readily available in the environment. Hydrogen is in abundant quantity and is renewable. Fuel cells use hydrogen and oxygen to generate energy and the only by-product of this reaction is warm water vapor which is harmless to the environment.

COVID-19 impact on the Gas Diffusion Electrode market

COVID-19 forced countries around the world to stop the flow of operations temporarily and go under lockdown. This negatively impacted labor. The manufacturing suffered a lot due to these lockdowns. The manufacturing industry came to halt. One of these industries was GDEs. The stoppage of activities such as operations, import, and export, manufacturing, and production reduced the demand for fuel cells by the consumers. The new construction projects and electric utility infrastructures came to a halt as well further widening the gap between supply and demand for the GDE industry. The market declined due to these reasons. However, once the vaccinations started and the world economy got in better shape. People started returning to work and the fuel cell market recovered by the end of 2021 further strengthening the GDE market.

The outbreak of war between Russia and Ukraine made the oil prices fluctuate worldwide. This gave a push to the fuel cell industry as governments started looking for an alternate fuel that would keep the economy stable. This also led to an increase in the demand for GDEs.

MARKET DRIVERS

An increase in the demand for fuel cells is driving the growth ofthe gas diffusion electrodes market

The volatility in the prices of oil prices around the world has forced countries to invest in green technologies. The fuel cell industry is supported by governments around the world and is provided subsidies as they are part of the green initiative. This has empowered companies to invest highly in the research and development of fuel cells. As the opportunities for low-cost infrastructure for fuel cell rises the industry grows. The GDEs being an integral part of the fuel cell also leads to the growth of the former. Major energy companies are also trying to get into the field of fuel cells and green technology as it will be difficult to operate in the future with an unsustainable operational model. The autonomous fleet vehicle demand has also proven beneficial to the increasing demand for fuel cells.

The rising demand for portable and backup energy is driving the growth of the gas diffusion electrodes market

The GDEs are used in multiple devices. One of these devices is batteries. These are portable batteries that are to be used when there is no energy or electricity available. Some countries still have problems with electricity. These countries have places where there is no regular electricity. This is due to the poor infrastructure of the country. But this problem can be solved by using portable batteries powered by GDEs which can be used to electrify the places where electricity is not present.

MARKET RESTRAINTS

Supply chain issues are restraining the growth of the gas diffusion electrodes market

There were supply chain issues that happened during the pandemic. Due to the slowdown in production and manufacturing the supply chain suffered. The prices of the final goods increased and the value chain got disturbed. The GDE industry also faced these issues during the pandemic period. Supply chain issues are persisting in the world.

The high cost of equipment for GDEs is restraining the growth of gas diffusion electrodes

The GDE industry is a cost-intensive industry that involves a complex operations. The industry has high entry barriers which mean it is not open to everybody. The research and development costs are very high to sustain the GDE business. Hence, companies must have a good amount of financial backing to support themselves and grow in the industry. The competition is increasing as with the advent of green initiatives everyone wants to build the best gas diffusion electrodes which are cheap, reliable, and efficient.

This research report on the gas diffusion electrodemarket has been segmented and sub-segmented based on type, application, technology, end-user, and region.

Gas Diffusion Electrodes Market Segmentation - By Type

Gas diffusion electrodes can be mainly classified into two categories, Platinum based electrodes, and platinum ruthenium-based electrodes. Platinum-based electrodes are standard electrodes. These can be used for hydrogen or fuel cells. They have many more applications also. On the other hand, platinum ruthenium-based electrodes contain platinum and ruthenium metal. They are very reliable and efficient. Both of these have high demand in the market.

  • Platinum Ruthenium-Based Electrodes

Gas Diffusion Electrodes Market Segmentation - By Application

In terms of application, the gas diffusion electrode market can be divided into three categories. These are fuel cells, HCl Electrolysis, and the Chloralkali process. These days GDEs are highly used in the production of fuel cells. These help in the basic chemical reaction in the fuel cell through which energy is generated. This energy does not have any harmful by-products. The by-product is generated in warm water. The other use of GDEs is the electrolysis process of HCl. They are used in the reduction of chlorine to chloride ions.
